HIMSS New York State Chapter

The HIMSS New York State Chapter provides a forum for HIMSS members to connect, collaborate and learn while playing an active role in improving the future of healthcare. Our members range from students to CEOs and represent organizations across the ecosystem.

We promote professional approaches to the operation, development and improvement of healthcare information and management systems that support patient care and associated activities. We provide members with useful information on national activities with local impact, local and regional upcoming events coordinated with HIMSS, and access to resources that can assist members in advancement within HIMSS including Senior Membership and Fellowship.

Committees

Chair, Mary Joy Garcia-Dia, mjg7004@nyp.org

The purpose of the New York State Chapter of HIMSS Advocacy Committee is to engage and mobilize members and its collaborators to conduct advocacy activities that include but are not limited to:

  • Educating members and Members of Congress and their staff on key issues to propose or write draft legislation
  • Working with key federal and state level decision-makers to advance improvements in the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare

 The vision of the committee strives to influence policy (local, state, federal) and public opinion that promotes organizational and member interest and addresses underlying inequities.

The purpose of the Compliance Committee is to assist the Board in overseeing the Chapter’s activities in the areas of corporate responsibility and compliance.  The Committee develops compliance policies and procedures to ensure that the Chapter complies with applicable state and federal law, its By-Laws, the Compliance policies and procedures and the HIMSS National Code of Ethics and Principles of Conduct. The Compliance Committee is also responsible for identifying and reporting to the Board any practice or activity which violates the above listed artifacts. The Committee will also develop compliance training materials and a communication plan to ensure all chapter membership has awareness and understanding of the compliance duties and responsibilities including methods for reporting compliance concerns.

The purpose of the New York State HIMSS Diversity Committee is to strategize ways to demonstrate diversity in the workplace and support respect for the differences among our members, co-workers, students, and community. The Committee supports the definition of Diversity as including people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds including, but not limited to: race, age, national origin, ethnicity such as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color), cultural diversity, sexual orientation gender identity (SOGI), physical ability.
The Diversity Committee will:

  • Foster an environment that supports inclusion throughout the NYHIMSS Chapter membership
  • Support a dialogue to develop an awareness of diversity through education, events, and engagement of members
  • Support the ongoing initiative and work needed to strengthen health and social equity in our organizations and workplaces
  • Promote diversity in our membership, workplace, and schools

The committee is committed to facilitating member engagement that supports diversity in our chapter membership and our organizations through education and dialogue. The committee will also leverage the skills, expertise, and professionalism of its members to achieve its mission.

Theme:
Foster an environment that supports inclusion throughout the NYSHIMSS Chapter membership regardless of religion, ethnicity, social status, age, disability status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or any other aspect which makes them unique.

The Finance Committee (the “Committee”) is a standing committee of the Board of Directors (BOD) of the New York HIMSS Chapter. Its purpose is to advise the BoD in making the optimal financial decisions for the benefit of the chapter and its members.

Specifically, the Committee shall have the following responsibilities:

  • Develop and recommend the structure of the annual sponsorship program to the BoD
  • Develop and recommend the annual budget for each fiscal year to the BoD
  • Review quarterly and annual financial reports prepared by the Treasurer and report its findings and recommendations to the BoD regarding the financial position of the chapter.
  • Research, analyze, consult and make recommendations to the BoD on programs, activities and tools to optimize the chapter’s financial performance, including expense control and revenue generation.
  • Create task forces on an ad-hoc basis to review the sponsorship program and consult with current and prospective sponsors.
  • Establish financial policies, procedures and controls for the chapter.
  • Assess whether the chapter’s activities are in compliance with HIMSS National policies and procedures from a financial perspective and report any noncompliance or irregularity to the BoD.

The purpose of the IT Leaders Committee is to develop forums and programs for Healthcare IT leaders to interact with each other and exchange information and ideas relating to common professional challenges and opportunities. The professional development activities are closely aligned with NY HIMSS strategic priorities.
 
The Committee is committed to facilitating career growth for HIT professionals by leveraging the skills, expertise and professionalism of its membership to help each other.

The purpose of the Membership Committee of the NYS chapter of HIMSS is to facilitate the mission of the HIMSS New York State Chapter by delivering a phenomenal member experience. The Membership Committee is responsible for member engagement and growth and will collect and manage data on membership behavior and preferences as directed by the NYHIMSS board and other committees.
The membership committee manages the chapter website and oversees the external brand and communications to all chapter members.
The Membership Committee will have a Board Member as Chair and a non-Board Member as Co-Chair.  In addition, the committee will have 4 Task Forces as described below:

  • Mentoring - Responsible for providing a forum and programs to facilitate career development for HIT professionals interested in attaining leadership roles
  • Provider Member Engagement - Responsible for managing our existing Organization Affiliate Program as well as other programs designed to increase the number of engaged members from provider organizations
  • Marketing - Responsible for Member Communications, including Social Media Channels and branding
  • Technology - Responsible for maintenance of the chapter website and associated technologies required to support chapter operations

The purpose of the New York State HIMSS Nursing Committee is to provide networking and educational opportunities that prepare and support New York State nurses in an informatics role. Engagement activities include, but are not limited to monthly conference calls/meetings, virtual and in-person networking, and educational events.

The purpose of the Programming - Education Committee is to develop programs for Healthcare IT professionals across NY State to actively engage chapter members. Engagement activities include, but are not limited to:

  •  Bi-Monthly conference calls
  • In-person and/or virtual educational and networking events
  • Virtual educational events
  • Collaboration with other organizations with similar goals and objectives

Primary function is meet the requirements established by HIMSS National. The Committee is committed to facilitating member engagement and enrichment for HIT professionals by leveraging the skills, expertise, and professionalism of its membership to help each other.  Seek topics of relevance based upon the changing landscape of HIT.
